Casey Day-Crosier Tangerine Designs Interview Gift A-long 2019

Casey Day-Crosier Tangerine Designs Interview Gift A-long 2019

Casey Day-Crosier, Indie Design Gift A-Long 2019 Interview

My name is Casey Day-Crosier, and I run Tangerine Designs. I design accessories, sew project bags, make knitting needle gauges, and pretty much knit constantly. I live in St. Peters, Missouri – a suburb of St. Louis – with my husband and two girls. I work for a Local Yarn Shop, as staff and a knitting instructor. I love being apart of a great community of fiber artists.

How did you get into knitting/crochet and who taught you?

I tried learning to knit from books, but it never made sense to me. But after a friend picked it up, I decided to try again – but with YouTube as a guide. You could say that I’m a graduate of YouTube University!

What made you want to start designing?

Tangerine Designs was originally just Project Bags and other accessories for fiber crafters. Several years ago my father got very sick, and it was hard to keep up with sewing from home. But knitting is portable! You can knit in hospital rooms. And with ideas popping into my head as I was knitting other things, I just decided to get those ideas out of my head and down on paper. It gave me a creative outlet in the midst of hardship.

What’s you favourite part of the design process?

It’s usually that a-ha moment when an idea actually comes out how I envisioned it.

What inspires you?

It’s always different. Sometimes, it’s a song lyric or a stitch pattern; but a lot of the time it’s the yarn itself. A perfect color combo is one of my favorite things!

Are you a full-time or part-time designer and how does that fit into your life?

I’m a part-time designer, or an “inspiration hits me” type designer. I find time in between all my other work and raising a family.

Do you have a favourite thing to design and why?

I do love to design hats. They are smaller objects that most people feel they can accomplish in a short amount of time. And I really like to wear them!

Do you have much time to make things for yourself or for gifting?

I’m actually a pretty selfish maker. I make things here and there for friends, family, and as for samples for my LYS; but tend to accumulate a lot of things for myself.

If someone knitted or crocheted a gift item for you, what would you love the most?

Anything! I know the work that goes into such gifts, and just being thought of is heart-warming.

Do you have a favourite yarn and why?

I’d say YARN is my favorite! I just can’t use alpaca – I’m allergic.

What’s your favourite of your own designs and what do you love about it?

Right now it’s my latest, Open Road hat. It’s really the only hat I’ve worn since finishing it. I really love the slip stitch panel and how the hat decreases.

Is there anything new you can tell us about or a recent design you’d like to chat about?

I have an idea percolating using this fantastic color called Mustard Seed from O-Wool. I’m actually getting ready to swatch this afternoon.

What’s your favourite colour?

I love teal and aqua. Probably half the things I create are in that color range. I’ve been trying to remember that there are other colors, but it really is a struggle.

Have you been a participating designer in the Indie Gift Along before and what do you love most about it?

This is my very first year as a participating designer. It’s very exciting. I’m not too chatty, but I love looking at all the Finished Objects from people. I pretty sure my queue has grown by at least 20%!

Which Gift Along 2019 designers inspire you and why?

I just discovered Megan Nodecker, Pip and Pin. I’m really loving her aesthetic. And I love her sweaters. I admire anyone that does garments since I’m an accessory designer.

How do people get in touch with you or see more of your work?
