Today we’re chatting to knitwear designer Jessie Ksanznak, aka yarnovernewyork tell us a little about yourself please Jessie.
How did you get into knitting/crochet and who taught you?
I learned to crochet from my mom as a young child. Then nearly 30 years later, I learned to knit, design and dye in rapid succession.
What made you want to start designing?
I’ve always been a kind of engineer. Creating my projects has been a lifestyle. Writing it down was the big step.
What’s you favourite part of the design process?
Knitting and crocheting. Figuring out how to make things work.
What inspires you?
Nature and music, mostly.
Are you a full-time or part-time designer and how does that fit into your life?
I am a full-time indie dyer and like that designing can fit in nicely as a side hustle.
Do you have a favourite thing to design and why?
Socks! Because they are totally the most fun thing to knit and wear.
Do you have much time to make things for yourself or for gifting?
I pretty much only have time to knit and crochet samples for my yarn and designs.
If someone knitted or crocheted a gift item for you, what would you love the most?
Socks, of course.
Do you have a favourite yarn and why?
My own… 🙂 I love working with hand-dyed yarn in general and my yarn s specifically because it so lovely to experience a more expanded experience in the creation of a finished object. When I put the dye on the yarn. I can imagine how the colors will interact both in the pan and on the needles. I enjoy texture, but I cherish color.
What’s your favourite of your own designs and what do you love about it?
I love my Fifth Floor Walk Up Poncho. I love the clever construction and endless striping options.
Is there anything new you can tell us about or a recent design you’d like to chat about?
I recently revamped my “Who Are You Socks” and am happy to announce that a toe-up version will be coming soon as well.
What’s your favourite colour?
Orange and rainbow.
Have you been a participating designer in the Indie Gift Along before and what do you love most about it?
Yes, I’ve done a few years. And I love finding new (to me) designers and fun new designs to knit.
Which Gift Along 2019 designers inspire you and why?
I am always inspired by Rachy Newin Designs. Her crochet talent is unrivaled.
